Gloriah Mutheu Mwangangi

I'm Gloriah Mutheu , an artist from Nairobi, Kenya, working across impressionism, abstraction, and textured mixed-media relief. My canvases are conversations between reality and imagination, between what the eye sees and what the heart already knows. I work with bold textures and striking compositions because I believe a painting should pull you in and make you want to stay. My work has been featured at the: 1. The Strathmore 60th Anniversary Painting Competition These are spaces where I've had the joy of watching people stop in front of something I made and feel something they weren't expecting to feel. When I think about why I create, I think about God, about Yahweh, about creation itself. I look at this world and marvel at how much beauty is in it, and I think: how much more can I make? Art, for me, is my way of participating in that. It is how I love nature, how I see life, how I bring the world as I experience it onto a surface that someone else can stand in front of and feel seen.

Studio Practice

Materials

Acrylic and oil on canvas, with occasional mixed media — textured grounds, palette knife, and raw linen for works that invite touch as much as sight.

Subject

Figures in repose, domestic interiors, the Nairobi skyline at dusk. Scenes that hold still long enough to become something else.

Scale

From intimate studies at 30 × 40 cm to room-filling canvases at 150 × 200 cm. Scale is a decision, not a default — each work dictates its own.

Process

A slow accumulation of layers — colour before form, atmosphere before detail. Most pieces live on the easel for weeks. Some for months.
